Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) – 1 day

This Emergency First Aid at Work course is aimed at those who are working outside and over 16 years of age, it is adapted to be very practical with the use of scenarios to reinforce learning and is in line with the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981.

 
On completion of training a successful candidate should be able to:
(a) Understand the role of the first-aider including reference to:
a. The importance of preventing cross-infection;
b. The need for recording incidents and actions;
c. Use of available equipment;
 
(b) Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
(c) Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizures);
(d) Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, (including use of Automated External Defibrillator AED)) ;
(e) Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking;
(f) Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding;
(g) Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock;
(h) Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters).
 
Assessment and certification
This course has a maximum of 12 candidates who are continuously assessed, with no final exam. Those that are deemed to have reached the required standard are issued with a certificate that is valid for 3 years. Under current guidelines it is strongly recommended to attend a half-day refresher course every 12 months.

The cost for this course for up to 12 candidates is £500, the course is run at Simply Tree Services, Wootton, Bedfordshire (alternatively we can come to your location).  
 
Open courses are run on a monthly basis and price per person is £100, the course is run at Simply Tree Services, Wootton, Bedfordshire.

EFAW+F

+F element required by forestry commission and is suitable for forest workers, tree surgeons, hauliers, rangers, ecologist and those undertaking site visits in remote areas)
 
On completion of training a successful candidate should have:
(a) satisfactorily demonstrated competence in all of the subject areas listed for the emergency first Aid at Work (EFAW)
 
And also be able to:
 
(b) Administer first aid to a casualty with:
a. Life threatening incidents and managing a casualty outdoors & in a remote setting;
b. Chainsaw injuries, Catastrophic bleeding (using Haemostatic dressings & tourniquets);
c. Suspension trauma;
d. Crush injuries, head and spinal injuries;
e. Hypothermia, Heat Exhaustion/Heat stroke;
f. Lyme disease, Weils disease;
g. Risk assessment;

First Aid at Work (FAW), Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), and Emergency First Aid at Work +F (EFAW+F) – qualifications have a 3 year certification period. Re-qualification for FAW must be done over a minimum of 2 days (now including blended learning option) and EFAW a repeat of the 1 day course is required.


HSE recommendation that first aiders undertake annual refresher training in addition to 3 yearly requalification training. This will help first aiders maintain their basic skills and keep up-to-date with any changes to first aid procedures. 

Half day annual refresher training

A half day annual refresher training can include:
(a) Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
(b) Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure);
(c) Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
(d) Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding;
(e) Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock;
 
Assessment and certification
This course is continuously assessed, with no final exam.

Open courses are run on a monthly basis and price per person is £30, the course is run at Simply Tree Services, Wootton, Bedfordshire. 

First Aid at Work (FAW), Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), and Emergency First Aid at Work +F (EFAW+F) – qualifications have a 3 year certification period. This First Aid at Work Course is for those who are 16 or over and need to be First Aiders in the Workplace. This course can be adapted to suit the relevant audience. The course includes both theory and practical and can be run over non-consecutive days on request. Once qualified, holders of this First Aid at Work certificate can be used as First Aiders in the workplace in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

First Aid at Work (FAW) course -3 days

On completion of training a successful candidate should have:
(a) Satisfactorily demonstrated competence in all of the subject areas listed for the emergency first Aid at Work (EFAW)
 
And also be able to:
 
(b) Administer first aid to a casualty with:
a. Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries;
b. Chest injuries;
c. Burns and scalds;
d. Eye injuries;
e. Sudden poisoning;
f. Anaphylactic shock;
 
(c) Recongise the presence of major illness (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthmas, diabetes) and provide appropriate first aid.
 
Assessment and certification
Candidates are examined on an individual basis on the final afternoon of the course. Certification is valid for 3 years with an annual refresher ‘strongly recommended’. For those that have previously completed a full 3 day First Aid at work course and their certification is in date or within 28 days after the expiry date they can take the 2 day requalification course. (Blended learning option available on request).
